King Billy’s grave

King Billy died in Geelong Hospital and was buried at Western Cemetery.  A headstone was placed there by the Mayor of Geelong at the time, Robert de Bruce Johnstone.  Descendants of King Billy still live in Geelong. Western Cemetery, Herne Hill, Victoria, Australia

Birthplace of King Billy

King Billy, or Willem Baa Niip, was considered the last of the Wathaurong mob.  His dad named him after a bunyip.  He was born on the banks of a lagoon near what is now Little Malop Street in Geelong.  King Billy defended his right to live on the land of his people.
